Humidifiers & Dehumidifiers

Humidifiers & Dehumidifiers

What is a humidifier?

A humidifier is a device that adds moisture to the air by releasing water vapour or mist. It’s commonly used indoors to increase humidity levels, especially in dry climates or during winter months when heating systems can make the air in homes feel dry. Proper humidity levels (ideally around 30-50%) are beneficial for comfort and health. They help prevent dry skin, relieve sinus congestion, soothe irritated respiratory passages, and reduce static electricity.

There are different types of humidifiers:

  1. Evaporative Humidifiers: Use a fan to blow air through a wet wick or filter, releasing moisture into the air. This is a popular and affordable type.

  2. Ultrasonic Humidifiers: Use high-frequency vibrations to turn water into a fine mist. These are quieter and often smaller than other types.

  3. Steam Vaporisers: Heat water to create steam, which cools slightly before it exits the humidifier as a warm mist. They’re good for cold weather and can be used with inhalants to relieve cold symptoms.

  4. Impeller Humidifiers: Use a rotating disk to fling water at a diffuser, which breaks it into small droplets. They’re also quiet and typically more affordable.

By keeping indoor air comfortably humid, humidifiers can make a big difference in overall well-being, particularly for those with respiratory issues or sensitive skin.

What is a dehumidifier?

A dehumidifier is a device that removes excess moisture from the air, lowering indoor humidity levels. It’s typically used in areas with high humidity, like basements, bathrooms, or spaces prone to mould and mildew, to make the air feel more comfortable and prevent moisture-related issues.

Excessive humidity (above 60%) can lead to problems like:

  • Mould and mildew growth

  • Musty odours

  • Dust mite proliferation

  • Damage to walls, furniture, and flooring

  • Discomfort in warm weather

Are they worth it?

A humidifier can be worth it if you live in a dry climate or experience discomfort from low indoor humidity, such as dry skin, irritated sinuses, or respiratory issues. By adding moisture to the air, a humidifier can improve comfort, help you sleep better, and even protect wooden furniture and musical instruments from drying out. For those with allergies or asthma, the right humidity level can ease symptoms, making a humidifier a valuable addition in colder, drier months.

A dehumidifier is worth the investment in areas with high humidity, where excess moisture can lead to mould, mildew, and dust mites, and cause structural damage to walls and furniture. By reducing humidity, a dehumidifier creates a more comfortable and healthier environment, especially in basements, bathrooms, and homes in humid climates. Additionally, it can help prevent musty odours and maintain the longevity of furnishings, making it useful for anyone seeking a fresher, drier indoor space.
