Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a mood disorder triggered by lack of natural sunlight, particularly in the winter months which is why it’s also coined as “The Winter Blues”.
The lack of natural light which is brought on from dark mornings, dark evenings, change in routine and body clock due to shift work patterns or perhaps sleep disorders, results in our body not receiving enough natural light. Sunlight is an important part of our body’s cycle, as it is with every living thing, and so we rely on it to provide a natural rhythm for our sleep pattern, digestion, energy levels and ultimately everything we do day-to-day. Without sufficient levels of morning light our bodies circadian rhythms are not triggered and our body fails to produce the hormones required to feel wide awake. During the day if we do not receive enough sunlight we feel sluggish, lethargic and low in energy and at night we stay awake long after darkness which can result in lack of sleep, disrupted sleep patterns and mood swings. This can affect our performance every day, and ultimately our overall health.
